“The Cultural Mandate”

"The Cultural Mandate"

Let me impart a little Tim Keller wisdom on you. He says… “[God’s plan] is not just a wonderful plan for my life but a wonderful plan for the world. It’s not all about me. Understand how our story fits into God’s story and begin to fulfill His plan for our lives. Scripture begins with the creation of all things and ends with the renewal of all things. In between is the meaning of all history. The biblical story makes a comprehensive claim on all humanity, calling each one of us to find our place in God’s story.”

And God’s story for us begins in Genesis. Genesis 1:27-28 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth’.”

Tim Keller calls this “The Cultural Mandate” and says that this gives our work incredible significance, since it is meant to be an extension of God’s work in creation.

What you do is extremely important! Do you feel that the work you do each day, has significant meaning or purpose? The bible says that work is good. I cannot do what you do and you cannot do what I do. The parts we play, the hearts we touch, the lives we come into contact with are there on purpose. “On purpose, for a purpose.” God has deliberately placed you and me in proximity to people that He plans to redeem. We can choose to take part, or not. But I can’t do your part for you. And you can’t do mine.

We each have our role to play in how God designed us to function.

Each part of the body has a different function, but they all work together to make the body function as a unit. This is the way the church ought to function. We are put together to work together; we cannot function to accomplish what God is calling us to accomplish unless each of us functions in our God assigned role.

And so if you look at it as not your story or my story or even Harvest’s story, but as God’s story, and search for your part, your role in the greatest story ever told. Then choose to function as a part of the most powerful organization on planet earth…the body of Christ, and serve out of your giftedness empowered by the Spirit of God. The work you participate in will point to something far greater than yourself!

You and I were created in the image of God. Therefore, we are God’s image-bearers, each with specific gifts and talents that our incomparable God has given us. Each with specific roles and functions that are only ours to perform. And if we don’t do it. Who will?
